Fish and Chips

blog1-003.jpgEngland might not be viewed as a country that has contributed much to the culinary world.  There food has even been labeled unsophisticated and unattractive. However, when it comes to fish and chips they hit a home run.   Canada, being a commonwealth country, has many fish and chips restaurants and this post looks to explore one such restaurant in Oakville.  It’s called Caz’s Great Fish

This is an award wining restaurant that has many different kinds of fish on the menu.  This fish selection includes Halibut, Haddock , Salmon , Sole and Orange Roughy. The recommend dish on the menu is called Caz’s Best.  Of course, it is fish and chips.  The fish is Halibut and it’s served with a large portion of chips and coleslaw.  You can see a picture of the exact dish at the top left.  It costs $11.49.  If you’re particularly hungry, you can upgrade to a large size and that costs $17.99.

I was there for dinner last night, before going to my nephew’s minor peewee white championship hockey game.  The entire meal was satisfying and I left the restaurant a happy customer.  I had Caz’s Best (picture at the top left).   Great value for money and delicious.  The service was good too.  Everyone was welcoming and friendly.  The decor is how you would imagine any fish and chip’s restaurant; nothing to write home about.  I would definitely go back to Caz’s again.

Rocco’s

blog4-001.jpgI can’t think of a better value for money Italian restaurant in Oakville.  The portions are huge.  It is literally a chore to try and finish their out-of-this-world lobster spaghetti.  At around $25 dollars for it, it’s well worth the price.  The spaghetti comes with 4 lobster tails.  It is very delicious to say the least.  I was there a few months back and they totally met my expectations once again.  They have plenty of other dishes on the menu including, grilled calamari, tomato and basil salad, stuffed Cornish hen with mushroom risotto and grilled vegetables, seafood linguine, clams and shrimp in a marinara, surf and turf,  sea bass and so on.

The decor is splendid as well.  There are two levels with an upper and lower dining room.  There is a bar located in the lower dining room.  A beautiful staircase leads from one floor to the other.  The stair case has a nice wooden carved railing, I might add.  The upstairs color scheme is unique.  The walls are painted yellow and green-blue.  The tables have chairs and wall sofas.  The wall sofas are a tomato red.

The service is good.  Not outstanding, but good.  The wait staff are attentive and polite.

The Oakville Rocco’s is located downtown Oakville on Trafalgar st.  It is  almost on the corner of Trafalgar and Lakeshore.  You can see it on a map here. There is plenty of parking scattered around downtown Oakville and probably the best spots are on Lakeshore Rd.  For more reviews on Rocco’s please check out Restaurantica.

Mye Restaurant

Mye RestaurantI have been living in Japan on and off for the last two years. Soon I will leave these shores and move back to Canada. More specifically; Oakville, Ontario. I can’t wait to get back home:). Anyway, living in Japan has provided me with the opportunity to eat grade A first class sushi. OK…I am a sushi lover, especially sashimi. The sushi here in Japan is wonderful, but I have to admit the best place for sushi, on this planet, is at Mye Restaurant. I have told this to a few of my Japanese friends, in Nagoya, and they scoffed at the idea that sushi could be better outside of Japan. Well, these taste buds think differently than the Japanese.

The Japanese restaurant outside of Japan that has the best sushi is at Mye Restaurant. Never heard of it? Well, it is located downtown Oakville across from Jonathans of Oakville. They have a great menu with a variety of different Japanese dishes, including sushi, sashimi, tempura, sukiyaki and so on. I go there for the sashimi dinner. It is a little expensive, at $28.75, but well worth the price.

SushiIf you’re not a fan of raw fish they have many other items on the menu. The service is great too. The man in charge is named Peter, I believe. He is a very cordial and pleasant man. The head sushi chef is a man named Moe. He is not Japanese but had spent several years in Japan mastering the fine art of sushi. After you’re finished dining at Mye Restaurant you can submit a review at: food inc or at restaurantica.com.
